MOVIE REVIEW: The Village (2004)

I originally knew nothing about this movie. The first I had even heard of it was when I was going on one of my numerous google searches for good horror movies to watch. Yes, indeed, this is a horror movie- or was intended to be. I didn't find it scary one bit; although, I maybe an odd case, because I've never found any horror movies frightening.

It packs a good amount of suspense into it, but the monsters in the movie just don't look... scary. It's incredibly difficult to make a horror movie creature terrifying, so I had been expecting this, but if you're looking for a monster movie flick, then you should steer clear of this one.

The problem I had with this film was that, the concept behind it was such a cool, broad idea, and so many different plots could have been done with it.

The concept tells of a small village who are confined to life only in said village, and if they enter the woods they will break an agreement they had with the menacing creatures inhabiting the forest- this agreement stated that if they stay out of the woods, they won't attack anyone and let the villagers live in peace. This all changes when a man named Lucius Hunt decides to dare entering the woods.

The way they went about it was disappointing. There is a twist near the end, which did catch me very much by surprise, but I was also again let down. Though I was taken aback, the twist definitely yet again did not live up to the amazing idea this movie had promised in the description I received.

All in all, the acting was mediocre, and this movie wasn't anything I'd consider very special. Overall I would give it 2.5-3 stars; if you'd like, you can watch it. It has a good message, and is tame on the terms of the scare factor. On the scare scale, it ranks a 2 or 3. I admired how it didn't use pointless bloodbaths and gore, and still managed to have a creepy, eerie feel. Not bad.
